The importance of using environmentally responsible refrigerants stems from their impact on the ozone layer and climate. One of the major contributors to this depletion was chlorine atoms released from chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) and hydro-chlorofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants. Alarmingly, a single chlorine atom can destroy over 100,000 ozone molecules.
To combat this, Canada ratified the Kigali Amendment in 2017 and is aligning its regulatory framework, accordingly, including pushing for lower-GWP (global warming potential) refrigerants like A2L refrigerants to replace R-410A and other HFC-based systems. Since then, the Canadian government announced multiple ways to control the import, manufacturing, and use of (HFCs) and encouraged the use of environmentally friendly alternatives.

This marked a critical turning point in the HVAC industry, leading to the transition from R-12 to R-22, and eventually from R-22 to R-410A.
While R-410A has zero ozone depletion potential (ODP)—a significant improvement—it introduced a new challenge: global warming potential (GWP). R-410A has a GWP of 2,088, meaning it is over 2,000 times more potent than carbon dioxide (GWP of 1) in contributing to global warming.
However, as of now, Canada has not yet released a clear, product-specific timeline for phasing out R-410A in the residential and light commercial markets. Canada can still import, manufacture, and install R-410A equipment, and mostly influenced by the U.S. market. As a result, manufacturers are now introducing new refrigerant systems. These newer systems use A2L refrigerants, which have a global warming potential (GWP) of less than seven hundred. A2L refrigerants have low flammability and low toxicity. While the term "flammable gas" often raises concern, A2Ls burn much less readily compared to more volatile substances. Despite concerns surrounding lower-flammability refrigerants, A2L refrigerants can enhance overall system design flexibility.
